University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City was established on the basis of merging the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (founded in 1976), the Ho Chi Minh City University of Finance and Accounting (established in 1976) and the School of Economics, General University of Ho Chi Minh City according to the Decision No. 2819/GD-DT dated July 9, 1996, of the Minister of Education and Training. On October 10, 2000, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 118/2000/QD-TTg on changing the organization of the Vietnam National University - Ho Chi Minh City; according to this decision, the School of Economics under the Vietnam National University - Ho Chi Minh detached to become Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics, directly under the Ministry of Education and Training.
University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City is a multi-disciplinary university with many diverse levels and training systems. The university has a team of professors and lecturers trained from famous schools, with high qualifications, scientific reputation and expertise. This is one of the main conditions for the school to improve the quality of teaching and learning and enhance its position and reputation in society. The University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City is the school with the largest number of students of all levels and training systems, from bachelor's to master's and doctoral degrees. The university offers two formal training courses, which are regular and part-time courses, and postgraduate training in the unfocused form; the annual average number of students is over 35,000. Currently, the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City is one of the 14 key universities in the country. It is the first public school to be granted comprehensive university autonomy by the Prime Minister (2014).
Since its establishment (in 1976), the school has trained tens of thousands of officials, economists, managers with university and post-graduate degrees for the whole country; ensuring the quality, reputation and receiving social recognition. In addition, the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City is also highly appreciated by prestigious organizations in the country and the world through rankings such as Top 1 Vietnamese university in economics and business with the most internationally publications (According to the Ministry of Education and Training); Top 601+ best universities in Asia (According to the QS Asia Rankings); Top 1,000 best business schools in the world (According to Eduniversal Ranking); Top 100 best master training schools in the world (According to Eduniversal Ranking); Top 25 universities in the world for Knowledge Transfer "Contribution to lifelong career development" (According to U-Multirank Ranking); Top 1 universities in economics and business in Vietnam in terms of digitalization capacity and spread of academic resources (According to Webometrics Ranking).

In recent years, the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City has been increasingly accelerating in the trend of educational integration and globalization. UEH's training programs and subject content are constantly being improved, updated in a modern, scientific direction, taught in Vietnamese and English, to meet the requirements of learners in all disciplines and levels. The school has 7 programs meeting AUN-QA standards and 4 programs meeting FIBAA standards (Europe), with over 20 close partners in training cooperation and international cooperation, scientific research and international publication.
